New District Attorney Conviction Numbers

In the article posted below, the new District Attorney (Andrew Murray) discusses his accomplishments within his first year in office. What the numbers mean for criminal defendants? Well, most of the numbers that are being discussed have to do with violent offenses. Within that section of criminal cases, Mr. Murray is largely focusing in on the expediated practice of getting to trial. This is a good step forward for those who have cases that can be won on trial or suppression hearings as well as those who are eager to learn their fate. Many times in serious offenses, the defendants sit in jail waiting their day in court because of high bonds, the increased efficiency will help those defendants.
District Attorney Murray, in particular, has come in with his focus on getting murder cases to trial. This does not directly affect most people that go through the criminal justice system, but it does show that the District Attorney's office has its focus on the top of the sentencing structure. It also indicates his emphasis on an efficient system which is good for the community at large, as a slow and lethargic system costs both the city and criminal defendants time and money.
